Mike Deans, Borderway’s Managing Director, has been crowned Car Finance Business Leader of the Year at the annual Car Finance Awards, in a black tie ceremony in Manchester.
Mike joined Borderway Finance two weeks after the company was formed in 1998 and has been an integral part of the business. As Borderway’s first Account Manager, he dedicated his time to forging relationships with motor dealers and businesses across Cumbria and South West Scotland. He quickly became known for his knowledge, friendly manner and drive to provide our partners with an excellent level of customer service. Over time, he worked to build up his knowledge of the industry as well as all aspects of Borderway. On top of his Account Management, he trained as an Underwriter and undertook the role of Marketing Manager, building awareness of the business within our area.

In 2014, Borderway Finance became part of the Cumberland Group and Mike was instrumental in the process, ensuring there was a smooth transition so there was minimal impact on our customers and our team. Joining the Cumberland Group allowed for a period of growth for Borderway with Mike, who was now Sales and Marketing Director, leading the new strategic vision. Part of this involved growing the team, allowing Mike to coach and mentor the new Account Managers, ensuring Borderway’s reputation for customer service was maintained.

In 2016, Mike was promoted to Managing Director in recognition of his hard work and leadership. Since then, Mike has lead the team through a period of record growth as well as facing challenges across the industry and businesses on the whole. Under his leadership, ensuring Borderway deliver an exceptional level of customer service and experience, has always been one of his aims, which has resulted in three consecutive Feefo Platinum Service Awards from an industry leading response rate. Mike has also championed internal development and progression, providing coaching and mentoring to all members of the Borderway team. This has been measured annually through the Group’s partnership with Best Companies and their B Heard internal engagement surveys which has seen Borderway recognised as a ‘3 Star World Class’ organisation.

As well as his work within Borderway, Mike also volunteers on the Board of a local advocacy Charity, People First, where he works in the local community to help set the strategic growth and direction of the charity by utilising his skills and knowledge built up over time in our industry.

Most recently, Mike has joined the Board of the Consumer Credit Trade Association taking an active involvement in their Motor Finance round tables. Championing smaller lenders, he ensures they have a voice in the industry as well as driving collaboration and sharing best practice across lenders, to ensure better customer outcomes.

Mike was joined in Manchester by Borderway’s Sales Support Administrator, Charlee Byers, and Administration Assistant, Leah Farish, to collect his award. Everyone in the Borderway team extends their congratulations to Mike!
